Netflix Acquires Worldwide Rights To Joel Coen’s “Jack Of Spades” For A 2027 Fall Release

Netflix has acquired the worldwide rights to Oscar-winning filmmaker Joel Coen’s upcoming gothic mystery, “Jack Of Spades,” which is scheduled for a theatrical release in Fall 2027 ahead of its streaming debut on Netflix.

The film stars Olivier Award winner Patsy Ferran (“Living,” “Darkest Hour“), BAFTA nominee and Golden Globe winner Josh O’Connor (“Challengers,” “Wake Up Dead Man“), BAFTA nominee and Golden Globe winner Damian Lewis (“Once Upon A Time In Hollywood“), and Oscar nominee Lesley Manville (“Phantom Thread“).

Based on Frances Frederica Montrésor’s 1901 novel “The Alien: A Story Of Middle Age,” “Jack Of Spades” is described as a sinister gothic mystery filled with intrigue and betrayal, set against the atmospheric backdrop of the Scottish Highlands.

The screenplay is written by Eleanor Catton, Joel and Ethan Coen, and Conor McPherson. Robert Graf, Frances McDormand, and Joel Coen produce the film, alongside Steven Rales for Indian Paintbrush and Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin for Blueprint Pictures. Donald MacKinnon serves as executive producer.

“Jack Of Spades” reunites Joel Coen with his wife and longtime collaborator Frances McDormand following their work together as producers on “The Tragedy Of Macbeth.” Both are Oscar-winning producers, with Coen having won Best Picture for “No Country For Old Men” and McDormand for “Nomadland.” Fellow producer Steven Rales won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for “The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar.” The project also marks another collaboration between Netflix and Coen, following the three-time Oscar-nominated anthology film “The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs.” Netflix is also reuniting with Josh O’Connor following his appearance in Rian Johnson’s “Wake Up Dead Man” (2025) and his Emmy-winning portrayal of Prince Charles in “The Crown.”

Ferran, an Olivier Award-winning actress, is particularly recognized for her acclaimed stage performances in “Summer And Smoke,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” and “Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?”

Behind the camera, Coen reunites with Oscar-nominated cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, whose previous collaborations include “Inside Llewyn Davis,” and composer Carter Burwell, whose credits include “Carol” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”

“Jack Of Spades” is expected to arrive in theaters in Fall 2027 before streaming on Netflix.
