Universal Pictures has released the trailer for Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. The film will be released in theaters on July, 17th 2026.
Plot Synopsis: “The Odyssey” follows Odysseus, the legendary Greek king of Ithaca, on his long and perilous journey home after the Trojan War, chronicling his encounters with mythical beings such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the witch-goddess Circe, as he attempts to reunite with his wife, Penelope.
What do you all think of the trailer? It’s a new film from Academy Award winner (feels great to say that) Christopher Nolan. No matter what it was, we were all going to be seated (some more so than others, as many had secured their IMAX 70mm tickets a year in advance —sadly, I wasn’t one of them). I love the historical epic. I love fantasy. Anything with worldbuilding and scope is my complete jam, and that’s the canvas Nolan is painting on following the massive success of “Oppenheimer.” This is truly his carte blanche film, and the world will be watching with great anticipation as we head towards the opening on July 17th. Working again with cinematographer Hoye van Hoytema and using brand-new IMAX film technology, it’s reported to be the first-ever narrative feature film shot entirely with IMAX film cameras. Every glimpse we’ve gotten of this so far has been astonishing in terms of the size of the production, combined with Nolan’s insistence on practical effects and filmmaking. It’ll be interesting to see how he deploys visual effects for the story’s more fantastical elements, if at all. I’m a little taken aback by the lack of grandeur in the production design as it appears Nolan is opting for a more minimalist approach, but perhaps there’s more the trailer is concealing. This is easily, probably everyone’s, most anticipated film of 2026, but will such heightened expectations sink this to the bottom of the ocean, or will it soar like an eagle higher than Nolan has ever gone before? Time will tell. But for now, as someone who grew up loving films such as “Gladiator,” “Troy,” the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and of course, Nolan’s entire filmography, this is a match made in Elysium.
