Netflix has released the trailer for Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly,” starring George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, Riley Keough, Grace Edwards, Stacy Keach, Jim Broadbent, Patrick Wilson, Eve Hewson, Greta Gerwig, Alba Rohrwacher, Josh Hamilton, Lenny Henry, Emily Mortimer, Nicôle Lecky, Thaddea Graham, Isla Fisher, Louis Partridge & Charlie Rowe. The film will have its world premiere at the 82nd Venice Film Festival, be released in theaters on November 14th, and then arrive on Netflix on December 5th.
Plot Synopsis: JAY KELLY, the new film from Academy Award nominee Noah Baumbach, follows famous movie actor Jay Kelly (George Clooney) and his devoted manager Ron (Adam Sandler) as they embark on a whirlwind and unexpectedly profound journey through Europe. Along the way, both men are forced to confront the choices they’ve made, the relationships with their loved ones, and the legacies they’ll leave behind.
What do you all think of the trailer? This is Netflix’s big contender this season, and coming off the critical and awards success that was “Marriage Story,” Noah Baumbach decided to take a risk and made the boldest film of his career with “White Noise.” While that film was not as well-received, he was involved in co-writing “Barbie” alongside his partner Greta Gerwig, which went on to become one of the biggest films of all time. So now, it appears he’s going back to his comfort zone, which is making an intimate character study but with a level of scale and refinement (and I’m sure some lessons learned) from his last directorial effort to produce what appears to be his most Academy-friendly film to date. A drama/comedy about an aging Hollywood star reflecting back on his career that also doubles as a road-buddy movie with dream sequences and meta commentary from Baumbach and Clooney on the state of the industry and mortality. Whew! There’s a lot to dissect here, and with that massive cast, the gorgeous photography from Linus Sandgren, and that awesome-sounding Nicholas Britell score, there are so many elements that give this the aura of “prestige.” It’s no wonder Netflix has high hopes for this one. Could George Clooney make a comeback with the Academy? Could Adam Sandler receive his first Oscar nomination? Could Noah Baumbach receive his first Oscar win? You damn right they all can, and then some. One thing is for sure: the name “Jay Kelly” will likely become synonymous with this year’s awards season. Let us know what you think, though.
