Focus Features has released the teaser trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’s new film “Bugonia” starring Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias & Alicia Silverstone. The film will be released in theaters on October 24th, 2025.
Plot Synopsis: Two conspiracy obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.
What do you all think of the trailer? It looks like Yorgos Lanthimos is back in his usual sicko mode, aka. “Dogtooth” and “The Killing Of A Sacred Deer.” The use of Green Day’s “Basket Case” to contrast the wild story of two paranoid conspiracy theorists who kidnap the CEO of a major company with Lanthimos’s usual dead-pan humor is pretty brilliant and signals to the audience this may be more fun than disturbing (though, I still suspect that darkness to play a major role in the experience). Visually, the film looks spectacular even if it doesn’t have the same opulent vision of “The Favourite” or “Poor Things” (but the font reveal of the title looks spectacular and retains the same bold vision for marketing his latest films have used– I particularly can’t wait to see a poster for this). This is easily one of the most anticipated films of the year and will likely premiere at Venice, then play at Telluride and NYFF, which is what “The Favourite” and “Poor Things” did. Or perhaps Focus Features has a different strategy in mind for this one? I’m curious to see how Will Tracy’s screenplay unfolds with Lanthimos’s signature directorial voice. I suppose to find out more, I could watch “Save the Green Planet!” by Jang Joon-hwan, which this is based on, but I want to go in as cold as possible because part of the enjoyment of Lanthimos’s films is their unpredictability as he explores the darkest parts of humanity with a curiosity and fascination for the absurd.
