After a hugely successful franchise revival in 2015 with “Creed”, the inevitable sequel has been in the works. On Monday, Sylvester Stallone confirmed in an Instagram post that he would, in fact, direct the sequel, “Creed 2”. Ryan Coogler found himself in high demand after directing the first “Creed” and opted to direct “Black Panther” for Marvel. That film obviously took a great deal of time for Coogler, leaving him out of the running for the “Creed” sequel. Stallone’s announcement that he would direct the sequel was somewhat surprising, although he’s directed five of the seven “Rocky” movies already.
Stallone famously came *this close* to winning an Oscar for his emotional portrayal of an aging Rocky Balboa in “Creed”, and now he’ll return, along with Michael B. Jordan. He confirmed that the sequel will film in 2018.
This news is a little underwhelming for many fans of “Creed”. The magic of the first film was so natural and felt like a completely unique take on the franchise. Stallone’s last directorial effort was “The Expendables.” That doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Nevertheless, expect a release date to be announced soon.
What do you think of Stallone directing “Creed 2”? Can he capture the magic of the first film? Does this news make you excited for the next film? Let us know in the comments!
