Disney and Pixar has released the trailer for Andrew Stanton’s “Toy Story 5” starring Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Greta Lee, Tony Hale, Annie Potts, Keanu Reeves, Bonnie Hunt, Ernie Hudson, Craig Robinson, Anna Faris, Conan O’Brien, Melissa VillaseƱor, Blake Clark, Wallace Shawn, and John Ratzenberger. The film will be released in theaters on June 19th.
Plot Synopsis: The toys are back and this time, Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie and the rest of the gang’s jobs are challenged when they come face-to-face with Lilypad (voice of Greta Lee), a brand-new tablet device that arrives with her own disruptive ideas about what is best for their kid, Bonnie. Will playtime ever be the same?
What do you all think of the trailer? Full disclosure: “Toy Story” is one of my favorite films of all time, and the entire franchise has been a staple of my life as I’ve grown up at exactly the right age that each of these films was meant to appeal to me (I was 5 when the first film came out). I felt that closing out the trilogy in 2010 with “Toy Story 3” was perfection. Gambling on “Toy Story 4” being a success was incredibly risky. Still, the team at Pixar managed to pull off a miracle, neither tarnishing the legacy of what came before nor delivering the first bad film in this franchise. However, I strongly felt that should’ve been the end. Now, it’s becoming clear to me (and as the tagline suggests) these toys are destined to be with us forever, so I’ve learned to embrace that not only is the fifth film coming, but there will inevitably be another after this one, should this entry prove to be just as successful as the other four films that came before it. With all that said, I think this premise of the antiquated toys competing with today’s modern technology for kids is pretty smart and I’m excited to see what Stanton (who has been a writer and producer on these films going all the way back to the original film) will do in the director’s chair as he’s helmed some of the best Pixar movies of all time (“Finding Nemo” and “WALL-E” most notably). As soon as I heard Randy Newman’s iconic “You Got A Friend In Me,” the emotions came flooding back, and I couldn’t help but be won over. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. What do you think, though?
