Focus Features has released the trailer for Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu” starring Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin & Willem Dafoe. The film will be released in theaters on December 25th.
Plot Synopsis: Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu” is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.
What do you all think of the trailer? After some uncertainty over whether Focus Features would agree to move forward with Robert Eggers’ vision for “Nosferatu” following the box office disappointment of “The Northman,” we could not be any more pleased to see it’s not only a reality but that Eggers looks to be the same filmmaker he’s always been since he debuted with “The Witch” in 2015. This trailer is tonally and visually perfect, selling us on Eggers’ take on the classic material (only the second time this story has been adapted following Werner Herzog’s “Nosferatu the Vampyre” from 1979). The use of the phrase “He is coming,” while never fully revealing Count Orlok, is a genius move, one which I hope they maintain through the film’s marketing and save for when audiences see the film this Christmas. Certain shots already stood out from the trailer (the shadow of the hand gliding over the city), and the craftsmanship looks impeccable, as usual, from Eggers and his collaborators. Could this be his first significant awards contender? It’s tough to say considering how challenging Eggers’ writing and filmmaking style can be for the broad membership of the Academy, but much like how “The Lighthouse” was able to secure a Best Cinematography nomination for Jarin Blaschke (who is returning as DP here), perhaps this could at minimum be a below-the-line contender. The Christmas release, as opposed to Halloween, suggests that Focus has quite a bit of confidence in the film to be a box office success as counterprogramming over the holidays. It certainly looks breathtaking, but we’ll have to wait and see how audiences respond to it. What do you all think, though?
