Trailer – “Is God Is”

Amazon MGM Studios has released the trailer for Aleshea Harris’ directorial debut based on her award-winning play of the same name, “Is God Is,” starring Kara Young, Mallori Johnson, Janelle Monáe, Erika Alexander, Mykelti Williamson, Josiah Cross, Vivica A. Fox, and Sterling K. Brown. The film will be released in theaters on May 15th.

Plot Synopsis: In “Is God Is,” two sisters embark on an epic quest for revenge, confronting a charged family history that will push them to extraordinary lengths. The film is Aleshea Harris’ directorial debut and is based on Harris’ adaptation of her award-winning play of the same name.

What do you all think of the trailer? As someone unfamiliar with Harris’ award-winning play, I’m highly intrigued by this concept and seeing how she visually portrays it on the screen. The cast assembled here is really fantastic, and I’m digging seeing Sterling K. Brown playing against type. Still, I can’t quite grasp what the tone of this is supposed to be. Is it meant to be a heavy, surrealist revenge drama? Or some dark comedy? A bit of both? The makeup work certainly looks good on Johnson and A. Fox; there seems to be a lot of fun to be had in the road-movie elements seen here, but otherwise, I’m a little skeptical, while remaining optimistically curious. Certainly, the acclaim for the play itself is enough to make me want to check it out, but what do you think, though? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below or on our X account.
