A24 has released the trailer for Ari Aster’s “Eddington,” starring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Austin Butler and Emma Stone. The film will have its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, and will be released in theaters on July 18th.
Plot Synopsis: In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and mayor (Pedro Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.
What do you all think of the trailer? Ari Aster is one of my favorite filmmakers working today, so “Eddington” is already not only one of my most anticipated films at the Cannes Film Festival but also one of my most anticipated films of the year. This teaser alone already encompasses so much of what 2020 felt like, from endless doom-scrolling to misinformation to people constantly fighting and the growing fear that the entire world might be ending. This is such an exciting cast, from Joaquin Phoenix to Pedro Pascal to Austin Butler and Emma Stone. I’m sure they will all be playing a figure who stands in for a certain viewpoint on the pandemic, and the story will be about how all of these people clash in this fictional town of New Mexico. I’ve heard the film is supposed to be darkly comedic and extremely violent, but I also expect Aster to tap into our own anxieties and fears just as he did with “Beau Is Afraid,” just now on something deeply political and affects us all, one way or another. Expect it to be one of the most hotly debated films of the year, but when you set out to make the definitive film about life during the pandemic, what else would you expect?
