The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held the 16th Governors Awards at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood last night. Honorary Awards were presented to actress, dancer, choreographer, singer, director, producer, and a former member of the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, Debbie Allen, by Cynthia Erivo, actor and film producer Tom Cruise, by filmmaker Alejandro iñárritu, and production designer Wynn Thomas, by actress Octavia Spencer. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award was presented to singer, songwriter, actress, philanthropist, and businesswoman Dolly Parton, who was unable to attend the ceremony and sent a video message instead. The awards, which are all Oscar statuettes, were voted on by the Academy’s Board of Governors this past June.
