Trailer – “Steve”

Netflix has released the trailer for “Steve,” directed by Tim Mielants, written by Max Porter and starring Cillian Murphy, Jay Lycurgo, Tracey Ullman, Simbi Ajikawo & Emily Watson. The film will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, followed by its global release by Netflix on October 3rd.

Plot Synopsis: Follows one pivotal day for a headteacher and his students, at a last-chance reform school in mid-90s England.

What do you all think of the trailer? I love how stylistically and tonally different it feels compared to “Small Things Like These,” the last film Tim and Cillian worked on together. While I’m not expecting much awards buzz for this one, it’s great to see Cillian consistently choosing projects that seem to matter to him rather than cashing in on his “Oppenheimer” momentum for something bigger and more commercial. I’m especially drawn to the editing and cinematography deployed here, and how Mielants appears to be using both to reflect the characters’ psychological states in a gritty and technically interesting way as opposed to a more conventional approach. Part of me wishes it weren’t releasing so soon after its TIFF world premiere, as I’m tempted to skip it in theaters and wait for its Netflix debut instead. We’ll see how the schedule plays out. What do you think, though? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below or on our X account.
