Trailer – “Rust”

A trailer for Joel Souza’s western “Rust” has been released, starring Alec Baldwin, Patrick Scott McDermott, Josh Hopkins, Travis Fimmel, and Frances Fisher. The western film turned tragic when a prop gun Baldwin was using accidentally killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza during production. The film will be released in theaters and on digital on May 2nd, 2025.

Plot Synopsis: A boy left to fend for himself and his younger brother following their parents’ deaths in 1880s Kansas goes on the run with his long-estranged grandfather after he is sentenced to hang for the accidental killing of a local rancher.

What do you all think of the trailer? Hutchins’ on-set death led to Baldwin being charged with involuntary manslaughter. However, the case was dismissed in July last year due to the prosecution’s failure to provide evidence. Meanwhile, armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed is serving an 18-month prison sentence after it was found that a live bullet had been loaded into Baldwin’s prop gun. Much has been written about the film and the production for many years following the tragic event that took Hutchins’ life, which led to a series of talks within the industry about gun safety. Her work looks particularly striking here, and while the film itself may not be an all-timer Western, director Souza has been forthcoming about how much he wanted to preserve and honor Hutchins’ work. I expect Baldwin to stay out of the film’s way during the press tour, but what do you think now that we’ve gotten our first look at the film? It had its world premiere at the Camerimage Film Festival back in November. While some international buyers have acquired distribution rights, the US and Canada rights have not yet been secured.
