Trailer – “Nuremberg”

Sony Pictures Classics has released the teaser trailer for James Vanderbilt’s “Nuremberg,” starring Rami Malek, Russell Crowe, Leo Woodall, Michael Shannon, Richard E. Grant, Colin Hanks, and John Slattery. The film will have its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival and then be released in theaters on November 7th.

Plot Synopsis: The Allies, led by the unyielding chief prosecutor, Robert H. Jackson (Michael Shannon), have the task of ensuring the Nazi regime answers for the unveiled horrors of the Holocaust while a US Army psychiatrist (Rami Malek) is locked in a dramatic psychological duel with former Reichsmarschall Herman Göring (Russell Crowe).

What do you all think of the trailer? On paper, there is a lot of excitement for this film due to the names involved. James Vanderbilt has written some tremendous screenplays over the years, from “Zodiac” to the new “Scream,” but then there were also some clunkers in there, too. His feature directorial debut, “Truth” (2015), was a solid film overall, but it lacked significance and didn’t rise above being just a well-mounted “based on a true story” film. I’m getting the same vibe from this movie, despite the impressive cast and production. However, something about its presentation feels off. Even if it’s another solid film from Vanderbilt, it appears to lack a strong directorial voice that would make it stand out from the typical WWII dramas we see each year. Also, what’s up with John Slattery’s delivery of “Welcome to Nuremberg?” That felt very unserious and took me entirely out of the trailer. I’m excited to see Russell Crowe in a meaty role as Herman Göring, but otherwise, this teaser was underwhelming to me. I hope to be proven wrong at TIFF, but what do you think, though?
