A24 has released the trailer for Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme,” starring Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara & Fran Drescher. The film will be released in theaters on December 25th.
Plot Synopsis: Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects, goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness.
What do you all think of the trailer? This is Josh Safdie’s first solo directing effort after he and his brother Benny gave us some truly excellent films over the last few years, including “Good Time” and “Uncut Gems.” “Marty Supreme” is one of A24’s biggest productions yet, and it looks quite unlike any of those other films. The production feels more refined, slick, and expansive, striking a crowd-pleasing tone of following Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects of becoming a ping-pong champion. Chalamet looks terrific here, and I love the utilization of the supporting cast (Fran Dresher?! Kevin O’Leary?! Gwyneth Paltrow?!), along with the “Forever Young” playing in the background to give the film a youthful and exuberant feeling. Some were wondering what kind of tone and style this would have, and it appears to be a major awards player for Safdie and A24. I’m beyond excited and praying to the cinema gods that the rumors of this premiering at one of the fall film festivals (Telluride or NYFF or maybe both?) are true. Could this be Chalamet’s ticket to an Oscar win? One thing is for sure: he, like his character, is in pursuit of greatness and it’s only a matter of time before he obtains it.
