Sony Pictures has released the official trailer for Taika Waititi’s adaptation of “Klara and the Sun,” starring Jenna Ortega, Amy Adams, Mia Tharia, Aran Murphy, Steve Buscemi, and Natasha Lyonne. The film will be released in theaters October 23rd.
Plot Synopsis: Based on the bestselling novel from Nobel Prize-winner Kazuo Ishiguro and written and directed by Academy-Award winner Taika Waititi (“Jojo Rabbit“), “Klara and the Sun” introduces audiences to Klara (Jenna Ortega), an Artificial Friend who wants nothing more than to find the perfect home. When Klara meets Josie (Mia Tharia), each immediately senses a kindred spirit in the other. Josie has a fraught relationship with her mother (Amy Adams), and they’ve suffered great loss, but Klara’s innocent wonder and unwavering loyalty begin to heal the family and bring light to Josie’s complicated world.
What do you all think of the trailer? I understand that Taika Waititi is not everyone’s cup of tea as of late. I really enjoyed some of his earlier films, including “Jojo Rabbit” and “Thor: Ragnarok.” But as of late, he has gotten on people’s nerves, especially with his last two films, “Thor: Love and Thunder” and “Next Go Wins.” Klara and the Sun doesn’t seem to be changing that perception, even though it also looks like it could be a sincere attempt on his part to harken back to that simpler style of storytelling that made him a household name to begin with. I’m not particularly sure how I feel about some of the casting decisions, as Amy Adams has been in a downward spiral these last couple of years and Ortega, who I generally like, doesn’t seem right for Waititi’s style of comedy. Perhaps I’ll be proven wrong. At least Lyonne seems dialed in to the film’s tone. The visual style looks pretty bland, and much of what I understand from the source material seems to have been transformed into a broad piece of entertainment that fits Taika Waititi’s sensibilities. Who knows? Maybe he will be able to explore the more complex dramatic issues within the book and nail the emotion needed to tell this story properly. A TIFF world premiere feels likely considering that’s where “Jojo Rabbit” and “Next Go Wins” premiered. But what do you think, though?
