Sony Pictures has released the official trailer for Neil Blomkamp’s “Gran Turismo” starring David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Archie Madekwe, Darren Barnet, Geri Halliwell Horner & Djimon Hounsou. The film will be released in theaters on August 11th.
Plot Synopsis: Based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, the film is the ultimate wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional racecar driver.
What do you all think of the trailer?
I must admit, when I first heard we were getting a feature-length film based on the PlayStation video game “Gran Turismo,” I did not think it would be this. It’s ingenious: take the action of playing the real-life simulation of the video game and bring it to the actual racing track. Considering the “Gran Turismo” games don’t particularly have a story, it’s not a terrible idea. Neil Blomkamp was one of the industry’s hottest directors when his Academy Award-nominated film “District 9” was released in theaters. But that was nearly 15 years ago, and his output since then has never matched that film’s success. Even the presence of David Harbour and Orlando Bloom, two actors whose work I enjoy, wasn’t enough to convince me this would be anything special. The release date being held in August, before TIFF, also indicates this being a commercial play with very few awards prospects. What do you all think, though?
