Many expected the HBO Films documentary, “Welcome To Chechnya,” to be shortlisted for this year’s Oscars in the Best Documentary Feature category. However, what many didn’t expect, is that it would simultaneously be shortlisted for Best Visual Effects. The film has resonated with many since its world premiere at last year’s Sundance Film Festival due to its powerful story of activism, defiance and perseverance in the face of a corrupt and brutal regime. Director David France and visual effects supervisors, Ryan Laney, were both kind enough to talk to us about the film, highlighting the visual effects work done to protect the identities of many of the documentary’s subjects and more! We hope you enjoy!
