By Will Mavity As of yesterday, the IMDB forums will be shutting down after nearly 20 years of existence. Though there has been plenty of toxicity in recent years, the Movie Awards (previously known as Oscar Buzz) forum has been home to one of the internet’s most entertaining awards groups for more than a decade: The IMDB Critics Circle (or ICC).
Founded for the 2006-2007 awards season, The ICC celebrates the best in the previous year’s films as the users of Movie Awards see it. Every year we receive between 70 and 120 ballots as part of the nominations round, and 100+ for the winners round. We began the 10-nomination concept for Best Picture before AMPAS, beginning instead in 2007. And we extended this lineup to all of the “big 8” categories. We also added in extra “below the line” categories: Ensemble, Choreography, Breakthrough Performance of the Year, etc.
As the forum ends, this will be the awards’ final year. As we reflect on the negativity that thrived in the IMDB forums, let us not forget, something wonderful arose from those boards as well, an awards show that has long featured community contributions, In Memoriam montages, pranks, gags, and a rich history of shocks and upsets.
