AFI FEST will kick off its 39th edition on October 22nd with “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere,” a 20th Century Studios’ biographical drama about the early career of Bruce Springsteen.
Written and directed by Scott Cooper, the film stars Jeremy Allen White as the music legend during a pivotal moment in the early 1980s, when he was writing the stark, intimate songs that became the 1982 album “Nebraska” while simultaneously recording demos for “Born in the U.S.A.,” the album that would launch him to worldwide fame. Jeremy Strong co-stars as Springsteen’s longtime manager and producer Jon Landau, with Odessa Young playing Springsteen’s love interest. The film is adapted from Warren Zanes’ acclaimed biography.
AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale stated, “AFI Fest is the stage and the screens where the world’s stories come together in Hollywood. To open with ‘Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere’ honors the global impact of an American icon and the true artistry it takes to tell his tale.”
Cooper added to Gazzale’s words stating, “It’s a true honor to open AFI Fest with ‘Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere.’ AFI has always championed bold, meaningful storytelling, and I’m grateful to be part of that tradition. While Bruce’s roots will forever be in New Jersey, Los Angeles played a profound role in shaping his artistic voice. I want to thank Bob Gazzale and everyone at AFI for this extraordinary privilege.”
The festival will run October 22nd–26th at the TCL Chinese Theatres in Hollywood, featuring red-carpet premieres, special screenings, world cinema, documentaries, and shorts. The full lineup will be revealed on September 30th, with individual tickets going on sale on October 6th.
“Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” opens in U.S. theaters on October 24th.
