“Society Of The Snow” Will Close The 2023 Venice Film Festival

Director J.A. Bayona’s (“The Orphanage,” “The Impossible” & “A Monster Calls”) new film “Society of the Snow” will close out the 80th anniversary of the 80th Venice International Film Festival on September 9th. It will play out of competition.

This is an epic story of survival under extreme conditions. It stars Enzo Vogrincic Roldán, Matías Recalt, Agustín Pardella, Esteban Kukuriczka, and Tomas Wolf, with a screenplay by J.A. Bayona, Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques, Nicolás Casariego from the novel by Pablo Vierci. It will be released by Netflix later this year.

In 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which had been chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, crashed in the heart of the Andes. Only 29 of its 45 passengers survived the accident. Trapped in one of the planet’s most hostile and inaccessible environments, they have to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.

The announcement comes after it was previously announced Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” was pulled from the Opening Night slot at the festival and replaced with “Comandante.” Other films predicted to make their world premiere at this year’s festival include Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,” Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” Yorgos Lanthimos’s “Poor Things,” Sofia Coppolla’s “Priscilla” and more. The full lineup will be announced tomorrow, but a cloud of uncertainty is hovering over the festival as studios might pull their films from the lineups as the WGA & SAG-AFTRA strikes continue. This year’s Venice Film Festival will run from August 30th until September 9th.
