Trailer – “Poor Things”

Searchlight Pictures has released the official teaser trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” starring Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, Christopher Abbott, Margaret Qualley, Kathryn Hunter. The film will be released in theaters on September 8th.

Plot Synopsis: From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

What do you all think of the trailer? Wow…We’ve all been eagerly waiting to see what Lanthimos’ follow-up to his Academy Award-winning film “The Favourite” would look like, and this teaser, despite not being a full-length trailer, surely didn’t disappoint. It is the most stylistically daring-looking film Lanthimos has ever conceived while retaining his now-established directorial style. Knowing the book this story is based on, it’s perfectly suited for his brand of humor and dark sensibilities. I do not doubt this talented cast of actors will relish the storytelling opportunities given to them by the material and Lanthimos. I’m curious about the release date, though. Does this mean it will open Venice or skip the fall film festivals entirely? What does that say about Searchlight’s confidence in it? What do you all think?
