“Next Goal Wins” Will Have Its World Premiere At TIFF 2023

Unsurprisingly, Taika Waititi’s upcoming sports comedy “Next Goal Wins,” starring Michel Fassbender, Will Arnett, and Elisabeth Moss, will have its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Taika back to the Festival and share his audacious take on the most popular sport in the world,” said Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF. “‘Next Goal Wins‘ is perfect for TIFF fans of the beautiful game looking for their football fix until the 2024 World Cup arrives.”

The plot for “Next Goal Wins” has been described as “Dutch coach Thomas Rongen tries to turn the American Samoa soccer team into winners.” Waititi’s 2019 film “Jojo Rabbit” won the TIFF People’s Choice Award and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay after its premiere, which made the debut of “Next Goal Wins” at Toronto an expected move by filmmaker and the festival programmers.

Searchlight Pictures will finally release the much-delayed film in theaters on November 17th. The 48th edition of TIFF runs from September 7th until the 17th. While other big premieres will be announced in the coming days, the entire film festival schedule will be released sometime in August.
