NEON is pulling out all the stops at the Cannes International Film Festival this year. According to Deadline, the celebrated independent film distributor has acquired the North American rights for Kleber Mendonça Filho’s lauded new film “The Secret Agent.” This recent addition to NEON’s slate makes it the fourth film that the distributor has played in the competition this year at Cannes (alongside “Alpha,” “Splitsville,” and “Sentimental Value”).
This latest purchase by NEON could be the security blanket they need to possibly ensure their sixth year in a row of winning the Palme d’Or. “The Secret Agent” is one of the most celebrated films playing this year at Cannes, garnering raves from critics and earning a 15-minute standing ovation. With the backing of a studio as respected as NEON, this could be the beginning for “The Secret Agent” to start a path toward a buzzy fall festival season tour.
Are you surprised NEON was the distributor to pick up “The Secret Agent?” Is NEON winning the Palme d’Or for the sixth year in a row?
