The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced today that Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle will receive the Gotham Director Tribute at the 36th Annual Gotham Film Awards Ceremony, taking place on Monday, November 30th, 2026, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. The tribute will honor Boyle’s extraordinary four-decade career and his latest achievement, “Ink,” which lands in select US theaters on December 11th, 2026, and on Netflix on January 8th, 2027.
“Across four decades, Danny Boyle has established himself as one of the true auteurs of his generation,” said Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute. “From the energy and urgency of ‘Shallow Grave’ and ‘Trainspotting’ to the achievements of ‘Slumdog Millionaire,’ ‘127 Hours,’ and ‘Steve Jobs,’ he has consistently brought a singular voice and perspective to the screen. With ‘Ink,’ Danny once again proves his ability to take a compelling story and make it feel wholly cinematic. We’re delighted to honor his remarkable career with the Gotham Director Tribute and to celebrate this exciting new chapter in his work.”
Danny Boyle is an acclaimed British director and producer whose career spans theatre, television, film, and some of the world’s biggest cultural events. He began his career in theatre before moving into television and film, making his feature debut with “Shallow Grave” in 1994. He quickly gained international recognition with “Trainspotting” (1996), followed by films including “28 Days Later,” “The Beach,” and “Slumdog Millionaire,” which won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Boyle has continued to move fluidly between genres and mediums, directing films such as “127 Hours,” “Steve Jobs,” “T2 Trainspotting,” and “Yesterday.” In 2012, he directed the London Olympic Opening Ceremony, “Isles of Wonder,” bringing his distinctive storytelling and visual sensibility to one of the world’s largest stages. His recent work also includes the television series “Pistol” and the film “28 Years Later.”
Boyle’s latest film, “Ink,” is based on the Tony-winning play by multi-Olivier Award-winning playwright and screenwriter James Graham. An explosive cinematic rollercoaster, the film tears open the world of tabloid journalism and follows a group of visionaries and misfits who set out to create a new kind of news – one designed to give the people what they want and change the face of the world they live in. “Ink” stars Jack O’Connell as Larry Lamb, Guy Pearce as Rupert Murdoch, and Claire Foy as Jules Davies. The film had its world premiere as the opening film of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival on September 2nd, 2026.
The Gotham Director Tribute recognizes filmmakers whose distinctive body of work has made a significant contribution to contemporary cinema. Recent recipients include Noah Baumbach, Jane Campion, and Denis Villeneuve. LAIKA, the acclaimed animation studio, was previously announced to receive the Gotham Anniversary Tribute at the 36th Annual Gotham Film Awards Ceremony.
Winners of the 36th Annual Gotham Film Awards will be honored at the awards ceremony at Cipriani Wall Street on Monday, November 30th, 2026. Nominees will be announced on October 27th, 2026.
