Focus Features has released the trailer for Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme,” starring Benicio Del Toro, Benedict Cumberbatch, Bryan Cranston, Hope Davis, Jeffrey Wright, Mathieu Amalric, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, Richard Ayoade, Riz Ahmed, Rupert Friend, Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Hanks. The film will likely be announced for the Cannes Film Festival this week, where it will have its world premiere, and then release in theaters on May 30th.

What do you all think of the trailer? I understand Wes Anderson is an acquired taste for some, but I’ve grown to become more particularly fond of his style over the years. Some have said it can be emotionally distant, but that would negate the fact that it’s absurdly crafted, beautiful, and filled with layers upon layers of meaning in its writing. “The Phoenician Scheme” appears no different as it feels like another quirky film from Anderson with lots of comedy and an aesthetic that feels like it was ripped right out of the 60s-70s. I’m sure, much like “Asteroid City,” there will be a deeper meaning beneath the espionage, assassins, and whatever heist the characters are attempting to pull off, even if it’s not entirely apparent in the trailer. Anderson has continually surprised me, crafting one of the most unique and highly rewatchable filmographies of any filmmaker out there, so I’m patiently waiting until its premiere at Cannes before I say anything further. As a final note, I’ll simply say I’m delighted to see Benicio del Toro in a showcase role from Anderson, and I hope it reminds people just what a brilliant actor he is. But what do you think though?
