20th Century Studios has released the teaser trailer for Fede Alvarez’s entry in the “Alien” franchise with “Alien: Romulus” starring Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn & Aileen Wu. The film will be released in theaters on August 16th.
Plot Synopsis: The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful “Alien” franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.
What do you all think of the trailer? I’m eagerly anticipating to see this franchise get a shot in the arm from Alvarez. His track record includes the creation of one of the most gripping horror films in recent memory, “Don’t Breathe,” as well as his uniquely twisted take on “Evil Dead” (one of the goriest and most brutal movies I’ve ever seen). While Alvarez’s consistency may have wavered at times, the prospect of a departure from the standard “people trapped on a spaceship with an alien” premise is enticing. The trailer seems to be telling us this will be a “back to basics” approach but I think it’s going to be much more than that. Additionally, it’s really exciting to watch Cailee Spaeney continue her rise within the industry following her breakout turn in “Priscilla” (she’s also received stellar reviews for her work in Alex Garland’s “Civil War” which will release in theaters next month). The teaser doesn’t give us much information as it’s mostly selling audiences on what’s worked for the franchise until now, but let’s hope the full-length trailer lives up to the promise of this new perspective.
