As if the cast for the “Gladiator” sequel couldn’t get any bigger, Deadline is reporting that Connie Nielsen will return for the sequel. Also, “Stranger Things” breakout star Joseph Quinn is in talks to play Emperor Caracalla. The film stars Paul Mescal as a grownup Lucius from the first film and will also star Denzel Washington and Barry Keoghan. Academy Award-nominee Ridley Scott is returning to direct after helming the first film, which won the Best Picture Oscar in 2000.
Little is known about the story for the sequel other than it will follow Lucius (Mescal), who is the son of Lucilla (Nielsen) and Maximus (played by Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe in the original film). The mother-son relationship between these two will be a major focal point in the upcoming film. Universal will be distributing the feature.
This is one of the most exciting upcoming projects. Many of us at Next Best Picture are massive fans of the original “Gladiator,” and we think Ridley Scott will make something special; otherwise, why would he return to this world? While Scott as a filmmaker can be hit or miss, judging by the amount of talent desperately trying to be a part of this project, it’s pretty safe to assume this is the real deal. As soon as you cast Mescal, Keoghan, and Washington, there’s already a ton of interest. Add more of these names and Scott’s technical prowess, and you have the makings of another cinematic epic.
