Many moments in a recording artist’s career can be considered “I Made It“ or “career Highlight moments.“ The first one may be having your song on the radio (or in this day and age, trending on TikTok), the next is being number 1, followed by a few Grammy nominations and maybe wins. This all has come and gone for 10-time Grammy Award and two-time Academy Award winner Billie Eilish. At the ripe age of 24, she has taken the world by storm with her genre-bending, personal music that constantly pushes the boundaries of what music can achieve. It seems like whatever she touches turns into gold as she continues to climb the ladder of stardom with continuous hits.
Now, she’s taking us on the road with her latest tour, featuring her classic hits and latest album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft.“As it’s known, the concert movie is not an original idea. Lots of artists have had the wonderful idea of filming one of their shows to showcase it in theaters around the world. It’s a great way to capture a moment in the careers of Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, P! NK, and more, and to allow audience members who weren’t able to attend the concert to enjoy it. Billie Eilish is following in the footsteps of other mega superstars.
But one of the reasons that makes “Billie Eilish Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour Live in 3D“ a must-watch is her collaborator: James Cameron (yes, you heard that right). With the success of “Avatar,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Avatar: Fire and Ash,“ and the re-release of every other film of his in 3D, Cameron sees Eilish as another challenge to improve 3D technology. Here, much like his “Avatar“ films, he captures her with 3D cameras. This state-of-the-art technology, combined with a talent like Eilish, who constantly aims to induce sensory overload in her shows, is a match made in heaven. Cameron’s fingerprints are all over this film as he finds new and interesting ways to capture Eilish both on and off stage. Her stage is a large, yet simple, rectangular shape in the round, surrounded by fans. A few musicians and singers are in a pit, but Eilish is mostly alone on the LED stage, rocking out. Eilish is such an intimate performer, and Cameron captures each interaction among her, her musicians, and her fans. Even at a sold-out arena concert, there is an obvious intimacy in her shows. Much like viewers feel as if they are on Pandora, the audience feels as if they’re in the front row, seeing Billie Eilish herself.
Cameron’s best quality is his ability to collaborate. Some of the best moments of the film include him and Eilish discussing specific shots she wants and Cameron stating how it can be done. It’s obvious how strong a role Eilish plays in the production of her own shows. Even with this film (for which she is credited as a director), she knows what she wants her fans and audience to see and feel, and having one of the world’s most successful filmmakers to learn from certainly helps. Cameron may be holding the camera, but this film is Eilish’s vision.
The film is mostly of the concert, which is intercut with a few interviews (conducted by Cameron) mere hours before the actual show. We’re given a glimpse into Eilish’s pre-show routine with her physical therapist and vocal coach, as well as into her band’s prep. Additionally, Cameron can spark candid conversations about her process, the gendered pressure she still faces when it comes to the clothes she wears, her relationship with her fans, and the reasons she performs mostly alone. But when Eilish is onstage, she is on fire. Watching her perform up close and personal is breathtaking. She is naturally an immersive artist, so having a camera in her face and in her hand gives her fans and audience a whole new experience of her live performance.
“Billie Eilish Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour Live in 3D“ is the result of two very innovative artists joining forces to combine their artistry and create one of the greatest concert movies to date. It is the magic of music and film. After watching the film, it will be obvious that Eilish is this generation’s great talent. She is a constant force who can have thousands of people in the palm of her hand at once. Unlike watching her perform at the Oscars for “Barbie“ or “No Time to Die,“ this is Eilish in her element, and she is a pure force to be reckoned with. Even if concert films aren’t your thing, this sure will be and will instantly make you a fan. Which, for the millions of individuals who weren’t lucky to see this tour in person, is such a blessing.
