Additions To The 2024 Cannes Film Festival Lineup

After the official announcement of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival lineup two weeks ago and the announcement of the parallel Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and Cannes Critics’ Week sections, the Cannes Film Festival has announce additions to the Un Certain Regard, Cannes Premiere, Special Screenings, In and Out Of Competition lineups.

Michel Hazanavicius’ adaptation of Jean-Claude Grumberg’s novel of the same name, “The Most Precious of Cargoes” will be the first animated feature to compete in the In Competition section since Ari Folman’s Oscar-nominated film “Waltz With Bashir” in 2008. This will be Academy Award-winner Hazanavicius’ fourth film to premiere In Competition at Cannes. Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat will score the animated WWII Holocaust drama. Persecuted Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” has also been added to the In Competition lineup. Jessica Palud’s “Maria,” about the tragic life of Maria Schneider, who starred in Bernardo Bertolucci’s controversial “Last Tango in Paris” alongside Marlon Brando, has been added to the Cannes Premiere section. Chinese filmmaker Lou Ye’s untitled documentary feature set during the pandemic has been given a Special Screenings slot alongside Arnaud Desplechin’s “Spectateurs,” starring Mathieu Amalric, and a new documentary film from Academy Award-winner Oliver Stone titled “Lula.” Celine Salette’s directorial debut “Niki,” a biopic of French-American artist Niki de Saint-Phalle (Charlotte Le Bon), has been added to the Un Certain Regard category while it was announced “When The Light Breaks” from director Rúnar Rúnarsson will open the Un Certain Regard section on May 15th. Finally, Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte’s “The Count of Monte-Cristo,” starring Pierre Niney, have been given an Out Of Competition slot at this year’s festival.
