Focus Features has released the official trailer for Robert Eggers’ “Werwulf” starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, and Lily-Rose Depp. The film will be released in theaters on December 25th.
Plot Synopsis: Witness Robert Eggers’ most visceral and haunting experience yet. Focus Features presents “WERWULF,” a harrowing tale of devotion, damnation and the devil within.
What do you all think of the trailer? Well, it certainly looks like a Robert Eggers film, which I’m not complaining about at all. As a fan of all of his films, I am absolutely in love with this man’s attention to detail, his style, his decision to never tell a contemporary story, but always set within a very specific time period, and how much he leans into the dark, gothic nature of the story he’s telling. The orthochromatic 1:37:1 aspect ratio and low saturation look of this are outstanding, even by Jarin Blaschke’s standards, who has also lensed his previous four films. There is an emphasis on grain and a nearly black-and-white look, which particularly makes this feel classical and radical within today’s cinematic landscape. Aaron Taylor-Johnson feels like the perfect casting choice to play a man who is, at some point in this movie, going to transform before our eyes into a werewolf, which is wisely not shown here in the trailer and is only teased, very similar to what was done with the Nosferatu reveal and Bill Skarsgård. Everything about this is working for me, but that’s primarily because everything that Robert Eggers has done in the past has worked for me. And if this is more of the same, I don’t think that’s a bad thing in the slightest. I say, “give us more” because nobody else is doing it like him. As far as Oscars and film festivals go, I suspect this will skip the fall film festivals just as “Nosferatu” did, and maybe even receive the same four craft nominations as that film did (Cinematography, Costumes, Production Design, and Makeup & Hairstyling), pending my actually seeing the film for anything extra. Until then, that’s what I feel comfortable predicting for what looks like will be another banger nightmare from Eggers. But what do you think, though?
