A24 has released the official trailer for “Tony,” Matt Johnson’s biopic on Anthony Bourdain starring Dominic Sessa, Emilia Jones, Dagmara Dominczyk, Rich Sommers, Stavros Halkias, Leo Woodall, and Antonio Banderas. The film will be released in theaters this August.
Plot Synopsis: A 19-year-old Anthony Bourdain travels to Provincetown and stumbles into the chaotic world of a restaurant kitchen, setting off a summer that will shape the course of his life.
What do you all think of the trailer? Yes, Chef! I like what I’m seeing here from Matt Johnson’s upcoming film, “Tony,” about the early years of world-renowned chef Anthony Bourdain. Dominic Sessa is perfect casting and Matt Johnson, hot off of “Nirvanna. The Band. The Show. The Movie,” looks like he has a potential winner on his hands here, similar to what he did with his other biopic, “Blackberry,” where there is a gritty style that favors character-driven storytelling and a chaotic shooting style that helps to give it a raw and gritty feel, but also makes it feel more human. The August release suggests that this may not be an awards contender for A24, as I’m a bit surprised that it’s skipping the fall film festival circuit. Still, maybe it’s a strategic move to get it out early and establish itself as a contender, whereas it might get swallowed up in the wave of other releases during that period. I’m really looking forward to this. I love all the other cast members assembled here. Antonio Banderas especially seems to have a lot to offer here as a mentor to Bourdain. But what do you all think?
