By Will Mavity & Daniel Howat
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” is one of the year’s very best films. A lot of that has to do with the source material by August Wilson and the performances from Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman. But a lot of what makes the film work are the crafts behind-the-scenes. Director George C. Wolfe was kind enough to spend some time speaking with Daniel Howat about what it took to bring the play to life on the screen. Also, Will Mavity got a chance to interview cinematographer Tobias Schliessler and the Makeup Department head, Matiki Anoff, the Hair Department head, Mia Neal and the personal makeup artist for Viola Davis, Sergio Lopez-Rivera. We hope you enjoy this inside look at “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
