A24 has released the trailer for the war film co-directed by Ray Mendoza Alex Garland, “Warfare,” starring Charles Melton, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Joseph Quinn, Kit Connor, Cosmo Jarvis, Will Poulter & Finn Bennett. The film will be released in theaters some time next year in 2025.
Plot Synopsis: Written and directed by Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland (“Civil War,” “28 Days Later“), “Warfare” embeds audiences with a platoon of American Navy SEALs in the home of an Iraqi family, overwatching the movement of US forces through insurgent territory. A visceral, boots-on-the-ground story of modern warfare, told like never before: in real time and based on the memory of the people who lived it.
What do you all think of the trailer? I really like that Garland brought on Mendoza to direct this with him. The movie looks to have a very realistic and grounded approach, avoiding the stylistic flourishes that have defined some of Garland’s other directorial works, which would allow this to feel more immersive. The decision to have it all play out in real time, too, is another choice I’m excited to see play out. Overall, this trailer does an excellent job of showing us what Garland and Mendoza’s approach to the typical “war is hell” formula is. Still, given both men’s experience in cinema and in war, and with a cast like this, I suspect this will be something special. What do you all think?
