NEON has released the official trailer for Zachary Wigon’s “Sanctuary” starring Margaret Qualley and Christopher Abbott. The film will be released in theaters on May 19th.
Plot Synopsis: A wickedly dark comedy follows dominatrix, Rebecca (Emmy Award-nominee Margaret Qualley), and her wealthy client, Hal (Christopher Abbott), as they engage in a high stakes role playing game for power and control. In the wake of inheriting his father’s hotel chain, Hal attempts to end his long and secret relationship with Rebecca. A battle of wills ensues over the course of one incredibly fraught night, with both Rebecca and Hal struggling to keep the upper hand as the power dynamics swing wildly back and forth.
What do you all think of the trailer?
I was fortunate to see this film at TIFF last year, and while it is a chamber-piece drama, I can tell you it’s one of the most riveting two-handers you will see this or any other year. Director Zachary Wigon gives both actors plenty of space to explore their characters through clever blocking. He puts us deep into each character’s psyche to understand what each one wants from the other while intelligently hiding the screenplay’s more diabolical twists. It’s such an organic unfolding of character and story that audiences will quickly forget it mostly takes place in a single room through most of the run time. Qualley and Abbott are tremendous, and the trailer definitely highlights their sizzling chemistry. This would make for a great double-feature with “Fair Play,” which premiered at Sundance earlier this year. What do you all think, though?
