Netflix has released the official trailer for Lee Chang-dong’s “Possible Love,” starring Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung & Cho Yeo-jeong. The film will be released in South Korean theaters on September 23rd, American theaters on October 26th, and on Netflix on November 6th.

What do you all think of the trailer? It doesn’t offer much in the way of plot, meaning there will still be plenty of surprises for anyone who watches the movie. It was recently announced that South Korea will be submitting this film for consideration for Best International Feature at the Oscars. It will also be premiering in competition at this year’s Venice Film Festival, which is where Netflix often debuts their more high-profile awards contenders. Director Lee Chang-dong’s last film, “Burning,” was released nearly a decade ago. Despite making the Best Foreign Language Film shortlist for the Oscars, along with critical acclaim and end-of-year mentions, it failed to eventually receive a nomination. In fact, “Possible Love” will mark the fourth time that a film by Lee has been submitted to the Oscars. Could this film break this unfortunate streak? The Academy doesn’t have a great history when it comes to recognizing South Korean films – “Parasite” remains the only South Korean film that the Oscars have nominated, and that not only went on to win Best International Feature, but Best Picture and Director as well. Netflix clearly believes “Possible Love” can go all the way, and their powerful awards machine may be enough to overcome the Academy’s historic voting patterns.
