Netflix has released the official trailer for Sam Esmail’s “Leave The World Behind” starring Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Myha’la Herrold, Farrah Mackenzie, Charlie Evans & Kevin Bacon. The film will have its world premiere at the AFI Film Festival and be available to stream on Netflix on December 8th, 2023.
Plot Synopsis: A family vacation on Long Island is interrupted by two strangers bearing news of a mysterious blackout. As the threat grows more imminent, both families must decide how best to survive the potential crisis, all while grappling with their own place in this collapsing world.
What do you all think of the trailer? I didn’t have any expectations for this, so to my delightful surprise, the tone of the trailer seems to be evoking the kind of M. Night Shyamalan twisty thriller where the plot details are vaguely hinted at but not fully revealed. I love Esmail’s camerawork from his output on “Mr. Robot” and “Homecoming,” and he looks to be carrying over that same off-kilter but visually arresting aesthetic from his television productions while incorporating what seems to be some extensive visual effects work. While he has not directed a feature film since “Comet” in 2014, due to his television success, this feels in many ways almost like a re-boot for him in the feature film world now that he’s developed quite a reputation for himself.
