20th Century Studios has released the official teaser trailer for Wes Ball’s “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes” starring Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy. The film will release in theaters on May 24th, 2023.
Plot Synopsis: Director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global epic franchise set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously, and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.
What do you all think of the trailer? While I will miss Andy Serkis and director Matt Reeves, what they started with the original trilogy appears to have transitioned over stylistically to “Kingdom.” This is an effective teaser as it re-introduces us to the world post the Reeves trilogy while introducing us to new clans, power dynamics, characters, and more without revealing too much. You can already mark this down as a Best Visual Effects contender for 2024, and given its release date, could a Cannes Film Festival world premiere be in the cards? Considering the prestige the Reeves trilogy obtained, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. I’m not too concerned with Ball taking over the reins from Reeves, and the screenplay by Josh Friedman (“War of the Worlds”), Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver (“Avatar: The Way of Water“), and Patrick Aison (“Prey“) features a lot of talent I have trust in.
