Trailer – “Flora And Son”

Apple has released the official trailer for John Carney’s “Flora And Son” starring Eve Hewson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jack Reynor & Orén Kinlan. The film will screen next at TIFF then premiere in select theaters on Friday, September 22nd, ahead of its global premiere on Apple TV+ on Friday, September 29th, 2023.

Plot Synopsis: Single mom Flora (Eve Hewson) is at a loss about what to do with her rebellious teenage son, Max (Orén Kinlan). Encouraged by the police to find Max a hobby, Flora tries to occupy him with a beat-up acoustic guitar. With the help of a washed-up LA musician (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Flora and Max discover the transformative power of music. From the musical mind of John Carney, “Flora and Son” explores the bond between a mother and son on a journey toward a new harmony.

What do you all think of the trailer? This was easily one of the best films I saw at Sundance 2023 (and one of the few that screened in-person only without a digital option to view at home for those who were covering the festival). If you’ve seen one John Carney film, you’ve seen them all, and for most looking forward to his latest, that will be a good thing. Anyone who enjoyed Carney’s previous films will find more of the same but in a good way here as it hits familiar plot beats, but with a deft level of skill few filmmakers can pull off without it coming across as cheesy and unearned. It features music, a feel-good story, and down-to-earth performances with a lead character that’s easy to root for. Eve Hewson is really terrific here and will likely break out in a major way following the release of this film. The trailer perfectly captures the tone of the film and I have no doubt in my mind audiences will love it whenever they get a chance to see it, whether it be at TIFF, in the theater or at home.
