Searchlight Pictures has released the teaser trailer for James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown” starring Timothée Chalamet, Monica Barbaro, Elle Fanning, Edward Norton & Boyd Holbrook. The film will be released in theaters this December.
Plot Synopsis: Set in the influential New York music scene of the early 60s, A COMPLETE UNKNOWN follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician BOB DYLAN’s (Timothée Chalamet) meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts – his songs and mystique becoming a worldwide sensation – culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.
What do you all think of the trailer? Well, consider me shocked. Seeing as how this is still in post-production after production wrapped only this month, I did not expect this to be ready in time for December, but I suppose given the small nature of “A Real Pain” and “Nightbitch” possibly being divisive, Searchlight needed a Best Picture contender, this year and now, they certainly have it. A musical biopic on the life of Bob Dylan is tailor-made for awards, and Chalamet is such a superstar at this point in his career that he will be able to get eyeballs on this even in a crowded December. He frankly sounds excellent here, much better than he did with his singing in “Wonka,” and Mangold’s visual style (aided by his frequent DP collaborator Phedon Papamichael) looks assured and perfect for the tone this needs to be. Obviously, this being a teaser, we cannot expect too much (I’m still surprised we even got this to begin with), but we’ll have to go back to the drawing board now as far as our Oscar predictions go. Surely being a former nominee, Chalamet has to be in consideration but what about Mangold himself for Director and considering Searchlight gets at least one Best Picture nominee per year, this surely has to be their leading contender, right?
