“Obsession” is an American supernatural indie horror film written, directed, and edited by Curry Barker. It stars Michael Johnston as Bear, a shop clerk whose wish for his friend Nikki (Inde Navarrette in a breakout performance) to fall in love with him leads to terrifying consequences. Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter appear in supporting roles. Partly inspired by “The Simpsons” episode “Treehouse of Horror II,” the film was shot in Los Angeles on a $750,000 budget and marks Barker’s second feature following “Milk & Serial.” It had its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where Focus Features acquired its distribution rights in a record-setting deal for a genre film. Following its theatrical release, the film received positive reviews and became a box-office phenomenon, grossing $523 million worldwide.
