As far as nominations overlap with the Academy Awards for Best Picture goes, the PGA Awards are a crucial component to possibly understanding what will win the Best Picture Oscar as 9 of the last 12 years of winners have gone on to win the Academy’s big prize since the preferential era began.

2009: The Hurt Locker
2010: The King’s Speech
2011: The Artist
2012: Argo
2013: 12 Years A Slave & Gravity (TIE)
2014: Birdman
2015: The Big Short (Spotlight won Best Picture)
2016: La La Land (Moonlight won Best Picture)
2017: The Shape Of Water
2018: Green Book
2019: 1917 (Parasite won Best Picture)
2020:
Nomadland

Which film will triumph this year? The answer lies within these nominees. As far as nomination overlap goes with the Oscars, this is how often the PGA Awards have lined up with the Academy’s choices for Best Picture.

2020: 7/8
2019: 9/9
2018: 8/8
2017: 7/9
2016: 9/9
2015: 7/8
2014: 7/8
2013: 8/9
2012: 8/9
2011: 7/9
2010: 9/10
2009: 8/10

And here are the films that have so far received major citations for Best Picture throughout the season so far.

Belfast: AFI, CCA, GG, NBR, PGA, SAG
Don’t Look Up: AFI, CCA, GG, NBR, PGA, SAG
King Richard: AFI, CCA, GG, NBR, PGA, SAG

CODA: AFI, CCA, GG, PGA, SAG
Dune: AFI, CCA, GG, NBR, PGA
Licorice Pizza: AFI, CCA, GG, NBR, PGA
West Side Story: AFI, CCA, GG, NBR, PGA
The Power of the Dog: AFI, CCA, GG, PGA

Nightmare Alley: AFI, CCA, NBR
The Tragedy Of Macbeth: AFI, NBR

House Of Gucci: SAG
The Last Duel: NBR
Red Rocket: NBR

Nightmare Alley,” “Red Rocket” & “The Last Duel” are the only three to not be longlisted by the BAFTAs (their nominations will be announced on February 3rd). Is this a year where a film could come from outside of the PGA nominations and become a Best Picture nominee. It’s very tough to say at the moment, as we’re back to ten nominees this year and with Oscar nomination voting starting today, voters might just copy this list and not look elsewhere. Take a look at the other nominees including television here.
