“Small Things Like These,” a historical drama film directed by Tim Mielants (“Peaky Blinders”) and adapted by Enda Walsh from the 2021 novel by Claire Keegan, had its world premiere at the 2024 Berlinale earlier this year. It received strong reviews for its writing, direction, and lead performance from Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer“).
The story takes place during the run-up to Christmas in a small town in County Wexford, Ireland. Bill Furlong (Murphy) toils as a coal merchant to support himself, his wife, and his five daughters. Early one morning, while out delivering coal at the local convent, he makes a discovery that forces him to confront his past and the complicit silence of a town controlled by the Catholic Church.
We’ve already interviewed Cillian Murphy about his work on the film, and we will post a conversation with Mielants later this week. For now, please check out this exclusive clip from the film, which will be released in theaters in the US on November 8th from Lionsgate.
