A24 has released the trailer for John Crowley’s “We Live In Time” starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh. The film will have its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and will be released in theaters on October 11th.
Plot Synopsis: Almut (Florence Pugh) and Tobias (Andrew Garfield) are brought together in a surprise encounter that changes their lives. Through snapshots of their life together — falling for each other, building a home, becoming a family — a difficult truth is revealed that rocks its foundation. As they embark on a path challenged by the limits of time, they learn to cherish each moment of the unconventional route their love story has taken, in filmmaker John Crowley’s decade-spanning, deeply moving romance.
What do you all think of the trailer? It appears to be a standard relationship drama between Garfield and Pugh with no added hooks or gimmicks. When I read the plot synopsis, I’m instantly reminded of Andrew Haigh’s “45 Years,” but this trailer doesn’t seem to hint at whatever secret comes between these two characters that will occur in their old age. I’ve heard word through various test screenings that this wasn’t playing well, and I can get a sense of that through the trailer’s tone. Hopefully, the finished film plays out better in its execution than here, where it’s trying to have a mixture of dark moments but with light touches of humanity. I’m surprised A24 has this, but not so much when considering the talent involved. I guess we’ll find out in time, aka. TIFF. What do you all think, though?
