Trailer – “The Room Next Door”

Sony Pictures Classics has released the trailer for Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Room Next Door” starring Julianne Moore, Tilda Swinton, John Turturro & Alessandro Nivola. The film will have its world premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival and will be released in theaters on December 20th.

Plot Synopsis: Ingrid (Julianne Moore) and Martha (Tilda Swinton) were close friends in their youth, when they worked together at the same magazine. Ingrid went on to become an autofiction novelist while Martha became a war reporter, and they were separated by the circumstances of life. After years of being out of touch, they meet again in an extreme but strangely sweet situation.

What do you all think of the trailer? It’s Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language speaking feature film (he previously directed the English-speaking shorts “The Human Voice” and “Strange Way Of Life”) and Sony Pictures Classics is withholding on letting us hear any dialogue. Why would we though? We know what a master Almodóvar is as a visual artist, there’s no need to hear Moore and Swinton speak. With a little over a minute’s worth of footage and no dialogue, this teaser perfectly sold me on the mood and aesthetic for Almodóvar’s latest, which should always be seen as a gift to cinephiles, no matter the circumstances. His use of color and how he empathizes with human beings (particularly women) makes him a one of a kind storyteller. While “The Room Next Door” will have its world premiere in Venice and then play in Toronto at TIFF, I won’t be catching it until it arrives in the Centerpiece section at NYFF. It’s going to be challenging, resisting the urge to see what beautiful depths of human emotion Almodóvar is able to capture with his latest but I’ll manage. What do you all think? Do you believe this will be an Oscar player for Sony Pictures Classics? Do you need to see another trailer or are you sold already?
