Trailer – “The Return”

Bleecker Street has released the trailer for the new film from Uberto Pasolini, “The Return,” starring Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche & Charlie Plummer. The film will be released in theaters on December 6th, 2024.

Plot Synopsis: Odysseus (Fiennes) washes up on the shores of his home island Ithaca after twenty years fighting in and returning from the Trojan War. Scarred by his experiences he is unrecognisable from the mighty warrior king that left, 20 years before. His wife Penelope (Binoche) is now a prisoner in her own home, hounded by many suitors to choose a new husband that would take the throne. Odysseus and Penelope’s son Telemachus (Plummer) is facing death at the hands of those who see him as a threat to their ambitions. Odysseus is forced to face his past in order to save his family and win back that which he has lost.

What do you all think of the trailer? I like how the trailer utilizes the voiceover and hieroglyphics to explain the legend of Odysseus. For those who paid attention in school, this story will be familiar, but seeing Fiennes and Binoche reunite on-screen again to play Odysseus and his wife Penelope is a welcome sight for those who are fans of these actors. I was fortunate to see this at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it had its world premiere. It’s a slow-moving action-adventure film that is light on the action (until the third act) and high on the dramatics. I suspect some will enjoy it, while others will find its pacing and lack of excitement until the final scene insufferable. What do you all think?
