Trailer – “The Iron Claw”

A24 has released the official trailer for Sean Durkin’s “The Iron Claw” starring Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Stanley Simons, Maura Tierney, Holt McCallany & Lily James. The film will be released in theaters on December 22nd, 2023.

Plot Synopsis: The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s. Through tragedy and triumph, under the shadow of their domineering father and coach, the brothers seek larger-than-life immortality on the biggest stage in sports.

What do you all think of the trailer? As a wrestling fan who is familiar with the tragic story of the Von Erich brothers, I’m not entirely sure the non-wrestling world is fully prepared for how devastating this story will be. The trailer does an excellent job of establishing the wrestling culture of the 1980s (equipped with some classic throwback rock songs of the era) and the Von Erich’s place within that world as they were dominant, beloved, and respected by everyone in the territory. Zac Efron looks really impressive in this. I’ve heard this is supposedly the best role he’s ever taken on and will likely get those still on the fence about him to respect him finally. Throw in Jeremy Allen White, who is having a massive career boost with “The Bear,” and Harris Dickinson, who is showing with each passing role how versatile he is and the backbone of Holt McCallany, and you’ve got a film that will bring the drama and darkness this story calls for. Lily James is always a welcome presence, and her relationship with Kevin Von Erich will only add to the film’s emotional weight, which, in the hands of a filmmaker like Sean Durkin (“Martha Marcy May Marlene” and “The Nest“), I feel will be faithfully captured. Why did it skip the fall film festivals, though? Is there a lack of confidence in the finished product behind the scenes, or does A24 feel that withholding on screening it could positively impact its box office haul? What do you all think?
