Trailer – “How To Train Your Dragon”

Universal Pictures has released the trailer for the live-action remake of Dean DeBlois’s “How To Train Your Dragon,” starring Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn & Ruth Codd. The film will be released in theaters on June 13th, 2025.

Plot Synopsis: Follows a young Viking as he aspires to hunt dragons, and how he becomes unexpectedly a friend of a young dragon.

What do you all think of the trailer? I know many people are excited about this. “How To Train Your Dragon” is one of the best-animated films ever made and spawned a beloved trilogy with two sequels some consider to be just as good as the first film. Having the trilogy’s director and writer, Dean DeBlois, on board to direct the live-action remake gave me some optimism. However, after looking at this footage, one begs the question, “Why bother?” Toothless looks exactly the same as he does in the animated film, as does Gerard Butler’s Stoick the Vast, even going so far as to remind me of the look Peter Jackson’s dwarves had in “The Hobbit” trilogy (not a compliment). Some shots look directly re-created with the same framing and everything. Are we sure this is not a shot-for-shot remake? Hearing John Powell’s iconic theme again and seeing characters we know and love may not be enough here. We’ll need a full trailer to understand better how this will all play out. Or maybe the story is the story at the end of the day, and it will translate no matter what medium it’s conveyed in. What do you all think?
