Trailer – “EMANCIPATION”

By Matt Neglia

Apple has released the trailer for Antoine Fuqua’s “Emancipation” starring Will Smith & Ben Foster. The film will be released in theaters on December 2nd and then come to Apple TV+ on December 9th.

Plot Synopsis: An enslaved man embarks on a perilous journey to reunite with his family in this powerful film inspired by a true story.

What do you all think of the trailer? Less than a year following the infamous slap at the Oscars to Chris Rock, Will Smith has apologized and is now back with another film which might actually land him back in the Oscar conversation again (I doubt it) following his Best Actor win last year for “King Richard.” There’s been a lot of debate over whether or not Apple would release the Antoine Fuqua-directed film this year or hold off until next year, but with “Napoleon” and “Killers Of The Flower Moon” in the works, I imagine they didn’t want to have too many films competing in 2023, plus this film was ready to go and is said to be the best Fuqua has ever made. The teaser shows that there will be some serious desaturated color grading and the overall tone looks bleak. The word going around is that Will Smith is pretty great in the film but are audiences and the industry ready to forgive him for the slap? The reception to the film will be quite telling in that regard. Maybe other elements such as the crafts or Ben Foster (who is overdue for some Academy recognition) will be in contention for some Oscar nominations. What do you all think, though?
