Focus Features has released the official trailer for Ethan Coen’s “Drive-Away Dolls” starring Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Bill Camp & Matt Damon. The film will be released in theaters on September 22nd.
Plot Synopsis: Written by Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke, this comedy caper follows Jamie, an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian who desperately needs to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way.
What do you all think of the trailer? It still saddens me that Joel and Ethan split up and are making new films independently of one another. However, I suppose the bright side is that we can now get two Coen Bros. films more frequently since they’re working on different schedules. This movie’s overall vibe resembles their goofier projects, with bumbling, moronic characters caught up in circumstances beyond their control. It feels familiar but no less fun and this cast is undoubtedly appealing. I’m cautiously optimistic, just as I was with Joel’s first solo outing directing “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” but that film turned out just fine, so maybe this one will too? Considering the release date and the overall tone of the trailer, I think a Venice or Telluride world premiere with a stop at TIFF before its official release on September 22nd seems likely.
