Trailer – “Blitz”

Apple has released the trailer for Academy Award-winner Steve McQueen’s “Blitz,” starring Saoirse Ronan, Harris Dickinson, and Elliott Heffernan. The film will have its world premiere at the London Film Festival, screen the next day as the Closing Night film at NYFF, be released in theaters on November 1st, and then be available to stream on Apple TV+ on November 22nd.

Plot Synopsis: Sir Steve McQueen’s “Blitz” follows the epic journey of George (Elliott Heffernan), a 9-year-old boy in World War II London whose mother Rita (Saoirse Ronan) sends him to safety in the English countryside. George, defiant and determined to return home to his mom and his grandfather Gerald (Paul Weller) in East London, embarks on an adventure, only to find himself in immense peril, while a distraught Rita searches for her missing son.

What do you all think of the trailer? Well, this looks absolutely stunning, not that we should’ve expected anything different from Steve McQueen, one of our generation’s greatest artists, but with so little to go off of beforehand, I’m not entirely sure what people were expecting. It certainly looks more polished and higher budgeted than McQueen’s previous films while maintaining his particular quality of capturing the human experience, which makes him the profound filmmaker he is. The cinematography, costumes, and production design all look excellent, and I expect this to have some great sound work as well. Many have been questioning whether Saoirse Ronan’s role is lead or supporting, but everything Apple has told me indicates she will be supporting, and Elliott Heffernan is the film’s lead role. The trailer seems to support that here as we follow Heffernan throughout WWII London during the blitz bombing in search of his mother. Expect this to be a major Oscar player if the reviews out of London and New York are good enough, as Apple will be pushing this hard as their primary contender throughout the rest of the year. What do you all think?
